April 30th - Mom finally posts something

Here is our friend Lan pointing out that "its a baby"! This picture is actually from Monday, but I have not been online much to post so I am behind.

Miles did not let me sleep much last night again. I think I got two sleep epochs of about 1 1/2 hours each. This may have been payback for the circumcision. If so, fair enough. That process hurts my feelings. Drew and I have agreed that if for some odd reason the foreskin grows back (the pediatrician said this can happen on the rare occasion), it wins and gets to stay.

This morning, Drew had a CT scan so my mom watched Miles for about 5 hours. This meant that it was the little guy's first opportunity to eat from a bottle, which was fed to him by Grandma with love. I managed to pump just enough breast milk to last him the morning. My mom said that at first Miles was not used to the milk coming out so quickly so he made quite a mess. By the second feeding he had it down, however. That is a learning curve that makes his parents proud. Otherwise, Miles had a great morning. As his Grandma says, "he is a happy guy with a full belly". He also breastfed just fine after getting the bottle and it did not interfere with his latch at all, which is something I was worried about. Good Baby!

When we got back, I took Miles for a walk around the neighborhood. I am hoping that some sun exposure will help get his circadian rhythm up and running.

Here is Miles on the open road.

In other news today, Miles' first pair of sunglasses arrived! Drew was worried that the bright sun would give the little guy headaches, like he got when he first moved to Tucson. I am not sure what Miles is going to think of them, but hopefully he will learn to tolerate the shades.

By the way, I do not have "baby fever". One baby is plenty to handle for the time being. I blame the conversation that Drew posted on the "maternal glow", which for me was created by a combination of hormones, percocet and a glass of wine. I am making less crazy talk now that I am starting to ween of the pain meds.

Miles wakes up

Miles slept for about 3 and a half hours after the doctors appointment. Then he woke up to feed. In the interim, he discovered his finger...

Circ Day

Fewer posts today- sorry. We were all sleepy catching a few winks when we could. Our neighbor Michelle dropped by for a visit and gave us some muffins (Thanks!). Since Sara was up and about, I had to take it as an opportunity for a nap.
Miles sleeps best in his car seat.
Here he is before we went for his circ. It may look like he is sleeping, but I think he is pondering the intricacies of Keynesian economics. Closing his eyes helps him visualize the issues.
We told him what a circ was, but he seemed unshaken...
Here he is in the Dr's office.
Miles didn't fuss until we had to undress him. This always seems to be the worst part.
Miles is up from his weight 2 days ago (7lbs 15.5oz). The scale settled on 8lb. 4.5 oz. I missed the opportunity to take pictures for what happens next during Miles' trip to the doctors. They wanted at least one parent present for the circ in order to see how to apply the petroleum and secure the diaper. Sara, being the team member with the strongest constitution, was nominated (by me) to be the one to stay. I went into the hallway and called Pop Pop. It only took about 10 minutes. Here he is afterwards. Although he looks sleepy, it turns out they gave him too much sugar water during the procedure which he took in along with some air. This gave him some bad gas and we spent the next 30 minutes working the air out of him.
Starting to get fussy here.
We're changing him here. He certainly hates being changed. And now were safe at home. Miles is still in his car seat, either pondering the mysteries of the universe or sleeping. We're all trying to relax. Hoping you enjoyed the pictures.

Here are some pictures

He's sleeping now....

Long night

No pictures yet today. Sara had a meal last night with many onions and finished off with a tall glass of lemon rich water. The citrus and onions eventually resulted in Miles having gas. He was up every hour-hour and a half.

Grandma now has Miles and Sara is working on getting some sleep.

Whew- end of day 4

End of day 4. Everyone has been napping throughout the day. We're lucky to have Grandma and "The Original Grand-ster" here to help us. Sara's mom has been helping us with food and cleaning along the way (as long as the night time/changes and feedings). Very, very helpful!

Miles is doing the normal baby things, but as parents it's hard not to be amazed.
This is the scene around here at 9:30pm. Rest is a new commodity. We can only hope that each night we'll get more sleep.
Did I tell you that were tired? We do try to sleep when we can... Oh- and receiving blankets. Receiving blankets are a close 2nd behind the car seat in terms of useful items to have around. Now that he's spitting up, we just can't seem to have enough.
Mommy and Miles touching feet. I keep shooting pictures. I never knew how many people follow the blog, but comments keep flowing in. The consequence of this, however, may be Miles referring to cameras as "Daddy" when he is old enough to talk.
Extreme close up of Miles- you try to hold a baby and take a movie. Did I mention, we're tired?

No More Cord!

Miles lost his umbilical cord this afternoon. Whew!

Sara's mom god sprayed during the last diaper change. Notice the new "shield" technique.

Late afternoon seems to be Miles' awake time.

Afternoon nap

We all napped this afternoon... here are the highlights:

I think Sara is delirious- Here is an excerpt of our interaction:
Sara: "We're good at this. We should make more of these"
Drew: "You have baby fever already?"
Sara: "My own baby gives me baby fever"

Miles' leisurely stroll

We took Miles for a walk in the BOB stroller. It's good for Sara to get out and about (it helps the recovery). Here is Miles, loaded up in the stoller/car seat. The car seat has proved to be one of the most useful baby items yet- he sleeps the best in there.
Here we are at the end of the driveway. I got to drive and Miles was the wingman.
Although he didn't wake up on the walk, he made some awesome faces when he got some sunlight.
We ended up going for a few blocks, then going home. I don't think that Miles even noticed that we left...

Milk: Does a sleeper good

(I have Sara as a co-writer today)
Today was Miles' actual due date. I doubt he would've decided to come out today. I bet he would've been a bit late. Imagine how much he could've weighed
Believe it or not, Sara actually feels a little rested. Her milk coming in did wonders for Miles ability to sleep longer than an hour at a time. He was actually satiated enough that he allowed Sara 2-3 hours of sleep.

Few more pics (and a movie of Miles awake)

Miles with "G-Pa", "G-Diddy", "Ice-G", or "The Colonel". Name TBD....
Aerobics seemed to have worked. Here is "Action Miles".

Miles sleeping

Of course, while we are wide awake, Miles sleeps.
Sara is trying baby "aerobics". Notice that as he wakes up, he looks as if he is making something in his diaper (special for Sara!) or getting hungry (or both)

First Doctors Appointment

Miles sleeping before we left.
He kinda woke up before we took off.
The worst part of the visit was getting him out of his car seat, then taking off his clothes.
Miles now weighs 7lb 15.5 oz. He is up from the 7lb 14oz. (the weight he was when he left the hospital). The pediatrician was very happy to see this as Miles is getting breast milk and putting it to good use (In related news, the meconium has passed). The pediatrician says everything looks great and we will see her again for the "two week" check-up. We will see our pediatricians partner on Thursday for the "bris". Mazel Tov!
Miles ate before we left... you can see I got an "action" shot. Once again, we are proud parents.
He did have some quiet wakefulness while he at the office (not all crying/spiting up/gas).
We were in the office for about 50 minutes although only about 15-20 minutes was waiting/seeing the doctor and nurse. The rest of the time was dedicated to feeding. He ate and ate and ate. Finally, he passed out. We dropped in the car seat and took off. He's still sleeping in the seat (which is carefully placed on the couch). His feet felt a little cold, so I put the afghan that Mom Mom made on him.

Happy B-Day Pop Pop

Miles would like to wish his Pop Pop a happy birthday

Sleepy morning

Miles decided to sleep in 1 hour increments which meant that poor Sara was up in 1 hour increments (She let me sleep. I was trying to stay awake to keep records, but after falling asleep on the job I was dismissed). Now that it is well into the morning hours, Miles is sleeping. Sara is using this as an opportunity to do the same. When she wakes up, I need to ask her if waking up every hour is better than being woken up by a phlebotomist at 4am after 3 hours of sleep.

Sara's milk has come in, so were hoping that Miles will become satiated sooner and stay satiated longer. We're off to the pediatrician for a check-up this afternoon (3:15 appointment).
